Wendell Bainter

Former Banning school board member Wendell Douglas Bainter passed away while on vacation with his wife Kathy in Durango, Colo. the morning of June 4, 2019.

Wendell decided back in eighth-grade to teach U.S. government, and he ended up doing just that: for 30 years he taught government at Valencia High School in Placentia, Calif.

He was a highly organized individual — everything from his sock drawer to the books for the San Gorgonio Pass Rotary Club, for which he served as treasurer — was always in perfect order.

He earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in political science at Long Beach State University.

Wendell Douglas Bainter was born in Mason City, Iowa on Dec. 13, 1942. He and Kathy moved to Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning 17 years ago.

He was elected to the Banning school board in December 2009, serving a nearly three-year term before resigning in the summer of 2012.

Wendell was an instrumental volunteer and leader for Habitat For Humanity of the San Gorgonio Pass, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Gorgonio Pass Area and the Banning United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his parents Wendell and Doloris Bainter, grandparents Fern and Jess Bainter; stepmother Elsie Dobbertin; and grandmother Nelma Bainter.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathy Bainter of Banning; his daughter Debbie McDonald (Chris) of Banning and son David Bainter (Trisha) of Brea; Wendell’s older brother John Jones (Karen) of Banning; younger sister Belinda Awana (Jeb) of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and stepmother Jackie Bainter of Banning. He is also survived by grandchildren Lia McDonald, Katelyn Haenny, Amanda McDonald, David Mark Bainter, Taylor Nordeman and Kendall Bainter; and one great-grandchild Allison McDonald.

The public is invited to his memorial service on July 1, 2019, at the Banning United Methodist Church, 235 N. 2nd St. in Banning, starting at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow.

Burial services at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in Wendell’s memory to Habitat for Humanity of the San Gorgonio Pass Area, P.O. Box 269, Banning, CA. 92220.
