Ruth Alta Kelly

Ruth Alta Kelly was born to Fred Michael and Blanche Hudson Michael on August 19, 1928 in Brooklyn, Iowa.

Ruth grew up and went to school in Brooklyn, Iowa.

Ruth attended high school in Iowa where she began dating Donald Alvin Swangel.

They graduated from Malcolm High School on May 16, 1946.

After Ruth was hospitalized with spinal meningitis, Donald and Ruth became closer and decided to get married.

The ceremony was on June 16, 1946 at West Liberty Church of Christ.

Ruth was baptized a week before the wedding.

For about 15 years they traveled back and forth from Brooklyn, Iowa to Visalia, Calif.

Around 1961 they opened a café in Downey, which they operated for seven years.

Through their union, three children were born; Richard, Roger and Marcia Swangel.

Donald and Ruth decided to divorce and went their separate ways.

Donald moved to Hawaii and Ruth moved to Bellflower, Calif.

Ruth began managing a bar where she met Patrick Henry Kelly.

Ruth and Patrick later married on April 16, 1971 at Candleight Chapel in Long Beach, and resided in Bellflower.

About 1989 Ruth and Patrick moved to 1451 Michigan Ave. in Beaumont.

They enjoyed attending NASCAR races, riding tour buses to different casinos, and their fishing trips to different resorts.

Ruth volunteered with the Beaumont Senior Center for about 25 years.

Patrick passed away Aug. 6, 2000.

This is when Marcia moved to Beaumont and lived in the home with her mother until Ruth’s final days.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Patrick Henry Kelly; her parents, Fred and Blanche Michael; her sibling, Harold Michael; two sons, Richard and Roger Swangel; a grandson, Shane Derrick; a great-grandson, Nick Dearinger; and first husband Donald Alvin Swangel.

Ruth leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Marcia Derrick; seven grandchildren, Richard (Kari) Swangel, Dale Swangel, Dianna (Michael) Love, Dawn Swangel, Shannon Derrick, Sharina Derrick, Shalona Derrick; a great daughter-in-law, Chezell Derrick; multiple great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of family and friends.

Memorial Services will take place at Wiefels & Son Mortuary of Banning on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 11 a.m.
