Standoff

Eastbound traffic along Ramsey Street in front of Starbucks and Days Inn in Banning was shutdown for awhile as police engaged in a standoff with a suspect holed up in a hotel room. No details were immediately available, but a suspect was apprehended.

On Wednesday, June 12 around 9:30 a.m., officers from the Banning Police Department were dispatched to a disturbance call at the Days Inn Motel at 2320 West Ramsey St. in Banning.

When Officers arrived they spoke to the original reporting party and employee of the Days Inn Motel.

Officers discovered that an employee came into contact with a male patron in one of the hotel rooms.

The male was screaming and yelling and was extremely agitated.

The employee also reported the male was armed with a handgun.

The employee told police that the suspect closed the hotel room door and the employee then heard what appeared to be a physical altercation transpiring from inside the hotel room.

Officers confirmed that the room was occupied by a male subject and possibly a female.

Officers then made contact with the man, who refused to open the door and barricaded himself in the hotel room.

For public safety concerns, all occupants were evacuated from the hotel.

Additionally, Starbucks Coffee was evacuated and the roadway on Ramsey Street between 22nd Street and Mountain View were shut down.

After an hour and 15 minutes of negotiating with the male subject, he exited the hotel room and was detained.

A search of the hotel room confirmed the male subject was the only one in the room. Officers located a toy handgun replica on the bed of the hotel room.

The male subject was interviewed and he was detained for a mental health evaluation. There were no injuries to the public, officers, or the male subject during the incident. The male subject will not be identified in this case.

The Banning Police Department is asking if anyone has additional information about this incident, to please call the Banning Police Department Detective Bureau at (951) 922-3170.
